Operation

The pressure sensors are battery powered, and are mounted inside the rims. Each pressure sensor sends out a low frequency signal, that is picked up by sensors in the wheel arch.

This means that if you'd replace the rims on your car, the TPMS light will turn on. Additionally, as they are battery powered, after 15 years these batteries will be flat and thus not send out the readings.
